About BeerCalc2

Yes it's true. Work is under way on updating BeerCalc, which has served us faithfully since the summer of, er, 2002!

BeerCalc has (at the time of writing) some 119,000 recipes stored, and about 10,000 registered users, of which 2,500 have edited a recipe in the last year. So why change anything?

Well, the main new features to include at first are:

  • Ability to add unlimited malts and hops to the recipe (finally!).
  • Users can add their own ingredients to their own private list. So if you find a new and obscure hop, you can just add it*.
  • Better interface for tablets and smartphones.
  • "Misc" ingredients (i.e. flavourings etc) can be added to the recipe (rather than just in the comment field).
  • Ability to specify multiple step mashing in a more structured way
  • Multiple fermentation / lagering stages
  • Add the ability to comment / discuss recipes.
  • Add a "brew log" concept so that a recipe can be a "parent" to a number of actual "brews".
  • Clean up the (ancient) code to allow further improvements in the future.

So what won't be changing?

  • Fully backwards compatible. All your existing recipes will work the same.
  • Calculation will still take place locally - no waiting for the server to come back with the answer if you change something. (BeerCalc was a "Web App" before the term existed)
  • It will still be free to use!

Switchover is planned for Tuesday the 9th of Feb. BeerCalc will go offline during the day and remain so until switchover is complete, probably late that evening.

Constructive input is still welcome by email.

* NOTE: BeerCalc is still fully supported right now of course. So if you see a hop (or anything else) that you are lacking, just let me know and it will be added right away.
